OpenLampTech - Developer Interview With Bosun Egberinde
Platform Engineer Bosun Egberinde shares a great developer interview with the OpenLampTech newsletter audience.
Welcome to this OpenLampTech text-based developer interview.
Bosun Egberinde is well-versed in roles as a backend engineer, fullstack developer, and more recently, platform engineer.
Having programmed with Ruby at Shopify, to Laravel for current solutions, Bosun has a lot of experience and knowledge in working as a developer.
Needless to say, I am excited that Bosun participated in this text-based interview for the OpenLampTech newsletter readers.
And now without any further ado, on to the interview.
Q: Please introduce yourself and tell us what you currently do for a living.
My name is Bosun Egberinde, I’m a Nigerian who is currently based in Berlin. I currently work at HelloFresh as a Platform Engineer in Site Reliability aspects. In recent experiences, I’ve worked at Shopify as a backend engineer in Ruby and some others (mostly commerce) as a Fullstack developer. I’ve been a PHP developer for most of my career and while I still write PHP, I have a wealth of experience in other technologies as well. This interest in other technologies and challenges is what inspired me to take on the current role I work in.
Q: What PHP framework(s) and/or CMS(s) are you interested in the most or currently using (if any) and why?
I currently use Laravel the most for projects. If I’m starting something new, I will probably start with Laravel. It’s been a while since I used a CMS, but if I have to choose, I will go for WordPress. One framework I do find interesting is Hyperf, a Laravel-like framework that is based on Swoole.
Q: Is it important for developers to know some SQL and not rely solely on an ORM? Why or why not?
I think understanding SQL is a great way to use ORMs effectively and I think developers should try to deepen their understanding as much as possible as it will make them a better ORM user.
Q: What is one piece of software, other than an IDE or text editor, that you just cannot live without and why?
I play music a lot and the medium I currently use is Apple Music, so, I would say it’s probably something I can’t do without.
Q: You type all of your code in which IDE/Text Editor/Software?
I use a variety actually, I use VSCode for most of my non-PHP-related projects (mostly at work, since I don’t use PHP at work) and I use PHPStorm most of the time for PHP-related projects
Q: How has working as a web developer/designer/professional benefited you besides the obvious paycheck and monetary value?
I would say it has greatly improved my thinking regarding how I see problems even in my daily life. I feel like I now have this strong mind not to give up and keep looking for a way until I find a solution I can settle for. It has also been an avenue for me to meet a lot of great people and build relationships. I met my Wife, for example, because I was a developer and worked at the same place as her at that time.
Q: What hobbies or activities do you do for fun?
I play games in my spare time and I watch a lot of movies as well. If it counts, I also like going to the Cinema when I have the chance.
Q: Where can readers go to learn more about you and any projects you may have going?
I don’t have much of a public profile at the moment, but I can be found on Twitter where I randomly post things I do, thoughts and sometimes jokes. As for projects, I’m currently building PHPSandbox, and IDE for PHP in the browser and Play, a platform where you can try Composer packages in the browser.
Thank you, Bosun Egberinde, for sharing your knowledge and insights with the OpenLampTech newsletter readers and community!
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a great rest of your week.
Take care.
