And now, a message from this week’s sponsor. Thank you, Depot for sponsoring the OpenLampTech newsletter!
Depot is a remote container build service hosting BuildKit as a service, the same build engine that backs Docker. We can build Docker images up to 20x faster, thanks to fast persistent caching on NVMe SSDs, 16 CPUs, 32GB of memory, and fast native CPUs for Intel and Arm.
If you’re tired of waiting for slow Docker image builds, check out depot.dev.
OpenLampTech has sponsorship opportunities for your brand, product, or service in the weekly newsletter. As an independent publication, collaboration is very affordable. Sponsorships are available for early 2024.

How to Display Only Enabled WooCommerce Product Attributes for a Cleaner Shopping Experience
I enjoy researching and coming up with solutions for WooCommerce requests I see in online Facebook groups. Here is another such case where I learned a lot and am sharing the content with anyone interested.
Display ACF fields on the WooCommerce shop page
Customizing the WooCommerce Shop page often makes for a better customer shopping experience. I read a lot of WooCommerce requests in some Facebook groups and other online forums and one of the more common ones is how to add additional information to a specific page or pages. In this article, you will see examples of how to use the Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin to include some additional product data. While I'd personally place the needed code in a child theme's functions.php
file, this article has examples of editing the theme files. [Medium]
Understanding HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage)
As WordPress developers, we are all likely aware that the MySQL/MariaDB database is one hot mess. When the WooCommerce plugin transforms a regular WordPress website into a vast online e-commerce store, many additional database tables are available for data storage. High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) brings a semblance of structure and order to WooCommerce order data by implementing dedicated database tables for orders and order-related metadata. MariaDB spins out SkySQL as an independent, database-as-a-service company
After the rocky time it seems MariaDB has had on the public market these last few months, I think this is a good move. SkySQL is a cloud-native version of MariaDB. MariaDB was at one time, a drop-in replacement for MySQL. However, it has evolved into its own database with many differences (and features) from MySQL's. MariaDB is available on many default Linux distros as well. [Silicone Angle]
MySQL Document Store in OCI with MySQL HeatWave
The X Dev API is very powerful. When MySQLv8 first introduced the X Dev API and the Document Store, I wrote several articles about it on the Digital Owl’s Prose developer blog. As much as I like and can write SQL, having other options such as JavaScript and Python are assets. I mostly tried Python and you can do some powerful stuff with the CRUD methods with it. Heatwave is something I don't have a lot of experience with at this time. [lefred.be]
Rolling Release Linux Distros Unveiled: What You Need to Know
Other than a brief ‘install stint’ with Arch Linux and even Gentoo, I never used many rolling-release Linux distros. It was mostly Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or one of the other fixed-release distros for me. One benefit (possibly) of rolling release distros is that the software doesn't necessarily have an End-of-Life (EoL) date since updates, patches, and other enhancements are made to the distro continuously (as in very frequently throughout the life of the distro). Simple Database Software For MySQL
This article by Five, looks at the pros of using open-source SQL databases (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL) versus many proprietary and no/low-code databases (Airtable) for application development. Five provides a solution for developers to easily build out robust applications. Learn more about Dominik Keller and Five in this OpenLampTech developer interview. [five.co]
