This Week’s Picks
✔️ A Case for WP.com
By: Justin Ferriman
#wordpress
This post covers a great use case for WP(dot)com, simplicity.
I started with WP(dot)com for my developer blog, Digital Owl's Prose, in late 2016 and am still there today (as of this publishing).
I mainly started there out of ignorance (wasn't really aware of what all existed), but stay there for now because I've wizened up.
I only bring up this point that as the author covers in the article, using WP(dot)com is as painless as possible. Less thinking, and more doing the actual work (blogging in my case).
I built and (briefly) ran a self-hosted WP(dot)org site on a host I won't mention and it was a nightmare. Not so much the WP part, but more so the hosting. And, some fault on me as a junior still trying to learn.
I'll stick with my WP(dot)com Business plan...
✔️ What is mysqld?
By: Arctype
#mysql
The mysqld is responsible for a lot in the MySQL ecosystem. From High Availability to storage and security, mysqld is there behind the scenes making things happen.
There is a lot to learn about the internal functions of the MySQL daemon and this article by Arctype, lays out an easy-to-understand foundation of many of the processes involved.
I'm telling y'all, the folks over at Arctype drop some fantastic blog posts.

✔️ How to Fix the XAMPP Error “MySQL Shutdown Unexpectedly” (3 Methods)
By: Kinsta
#mysql
In my opinion, the Kinsta articles are pure gold and I always learn something from the ones I read.
Get 3 tips on how to solve this specific error message in your local XAMPP (the 2nd one actually surprised me honestly).
As a side note, I use the DevKinsta local development environment for WordPress and enjoy using it when I'm tinkering around with WP development. DevKinsta is also super-easy to set up and run.

✔️ How to Write a Good Controller? One of the Most Common Mistakes Using the Example of Laravel
By: Droptica
#php #laravel
This post covers some best practices for better controller structuring with an example using Laravel (although I think this can be applied to other frameworks as well).
Some actionable takeaways for me:
Spread out much of the business logic to other areas of the application.
The less code you have in the controller, the better overall.
Scrutinize the controller code to make sure it is a task for the controller and not some other service or area of the application.
✔️ CodeIgniter Form Helper library — at a glance
By: Joshua Otwell
#php #codeigniter
After my 2nd mini project (which was a similar clone to my first) with CodeIgniter 4, I just had to write about the form helper library.
Using PHP methods and functions to create the HTML form elements is super easy, especially since well, I like PHP.
I cover several of the available methods and what they map to for the HTML form elements.
✔️ Learn Symfony 6 for Beginners
By: Code With Dary
#php #symfony
Although I have not watched this video in its entirety, I did watch the first several individual videos as they were released a few weeks back. The Code With Dary, YouTube channel always produces quality content and the videos are top-notch.
Thanks to the content on this channel (through a different series of videos), I was able to finally solidify the whole MVC design pattern as it relates to core PHP.

✔️ PHP Tricky True False Examples
By: Waqar Ahmed
#php
Sometimes those truthy and falsy tests are so confusing to me, especially checking the return values of empty()
and isset()
- which are typically never what you expect.
