I'm all about saving time wherever I can in coding projects. In CodeIgniter 4, there are some handy commands you can use and save a lot of time setting up base file scaffolding: Command Line Generators (CLG). I recently explored using CLGs for Model scaffolding and was impressed with the time savings.
Here is this week’s content.
Intersect and Except in MySQL 8.0
(lefred.be)
#mysql #sql
MySQL is continuously evolving by implementing powerful SQL standard features. The latest release (at the time of publication) supports the INTERSECT
and EXCEPT
commands.
With each release, MySQL moves toward offering a full-fledged enterprise-grade database (in the likes of Oracle and SQL Server). Being open-source and free of cost makes MySQL even more appealing for web and application data needs.
In this article, see examples of the INTERSECT
and EXCEPT
set operators on one of the best MySQL blogs around.

Acquia Offers Long-Term Support for PHP 7.4
(businesswire.com)
#php #drupal
PHP end-of-life term is coming in November of 2022.
I'm behind on a project of mine in migrating it to a newer PHP version (ugh). Luckily (for me), it's more of an internal, intranet-type tool than a web-facing product.
However, Acquia looks to be supporting its Drupal customers with Long-Term Support (LTS) for PHP 7.4, which is definitely a nice offering.

Turning To New Database Software To Tackle Rising Uncertainty
(theusbport.com)
#mariadb #postgresql
Two things are certain:
Data is everywhere within any organization, service, or application.
We are only getting more data as time goes on.
Two underserved open-source databases that can run with (and often outperform) the best of them are PostgreSQL and MariaDB.
Don't sleep on either of them.

How to Create Custom Linux Mint or Ubuntu ISO
(itsfoss.com)
#linux
Linux Mint was the very first Linux distro I tried and it's currently my distro of choice (I like it 😁). I've installed and tested out Ubuntu before as well.
Both of these distros are pretty popular.
However, if you had multiple environments where you needed mirror installs of the same Mint or Ubuntu distro, you're looking at a lot of repetitive work.
CUBIC to the rescue.
"Cubic (Custom Ubuntu ISO Creator) is a GUI tool made to customize Ubuntu-based distros."

How to Pick the Right Web Stack and Level Up Quickly
(mixandgo.com)
#web
There are so many options in Web development stacks that it makes my head spin thinking of them all.
MEAN, LAMP, MERN, LEMP, JAM-stack, LAG-stack…
It goes on and on.
I've pretty much 'planted my flag' on LAMP-stack-based programming these days.
But, if you need a good resource of pointers in picking a web stack, here you go.

Should we use WooCommerce Block Theme Syntax in 2022?
(Ingo Steinke - dev.to)
#wordpress
I'm kind of along the same lines (slightly) as the author.
While I don't dislike WordPress as a whole, Full Site Editing (FSE) is becoming instant stress for me.
And I'm just wanting/trying to learn it!
I couldn't imagine having to do client work with it - yet. But, I'm so far off from that, it isn't really a worry.
However, I am definitely interested in learning some aspects of WooCommerce development so this is an interesting read for me.

The PHP DateTime Class
(php[architect])
#php
Where on earth would we be without Date and Time tracking and awareness?
There's no telling, really.
In almost every application or website, you will deal with temporal values in some manner.
The PHP DateTime Class is quite large - and powerful.
Here is a handy guide with several examples of PHP DateTime class functionality.

Experts disclosed a 22-year-old bug in popular SQLite Database library
(securityaffairs.co)
#sql
As far as my understanding goes, this security flaw is based on an Integer overflow, as discovered by Andreas Kellas.
However, this security issue was addressed in SQLite version 3.39.2 on July 21, 2022.
Be sure your project is updated if you are using SQLite.
