OpenLampTech issue #52 - One Year Old
The OpenLampTech developer newsletter is one year old. Thank you so much for reading and making it possible!!!
OpenLampTech is one year old!!!
Holy cow, how did that happen?!?
One thing I have learned is that consistently publishing a newsletter is hard work.
I know that is said time and again.
And there are many reasons why it is repeated consistently across much newsletter-related content.
I probably spent about 6 to 7 hours per week by the time I collected, curated, and read all the articles I wanted to share (and not share).
I was then adding in my own 2 cents worth.
I had thoughts of moving OpenLampTech to another platform like ConverKit or Ghost (which I essentially may use for the Digital Owl's Prose developer blog) but I have to be honest, I like the whole Substack ecosystem.
Substack is onto something.
They are regularly integrating new features and Substack discoverability within the 'network' can't be ignored.
Either way, no matter which platform I use, I am looking forward to another solid year of publishing the OpenLampTech newsletter.
Expect more developer interviews and news-related/reporting content - all covering the PHP, MySQL, and LAMP stack landscapes.
Content, code, and community.
That is OpenLampTech.
Thank you for being a part of it.
I’m so glad to have you here reading OpenLampTech! 👍
Thank you!!!

I’m using Reusable Blocks a great deal on the Digital Owl’s Prose developer blog and my bass fishing niche website. Reusable Blocks are easy to create and use, but oh so powerful. I like ’em. A lot. Continue reading and learn how to create a WordPress Reusable Block.

Placement of NULL values for ORDER BY with nullable columns
(sqlfordevs.com)
#mysql #postgresql
In SQL, we constantly are considering, managing, and dealing with NULL
values in some way.
Sorting on nullable columns is no different as we have to be mindful of them.
The TLDR:
MySQL lists
NULLs
first in the sorting order.PostgreSQL places
NULLs
last in the sorting order.

Working with Custom Tables in WordPress – Installing and Updating
(ibenic.com)
#wordpress #php
Sometimes you need more custom or better-suited tables than the default posts
or postmeta
default WordPress tables.
Enter custom tables.
Without the MySQL/MariaDB database, we couldn’t store useful or necessary data for the WordPress website.
In this post, we see examples of classes you can use to install and update WordPress custom tables along with when and where in the code to use the methods.

Best MySQL GUI Clients for Linux in 2022
(blog.devart.com)
#mysql #linux
I couldn't agree more that Linux definitely is or feels like a developer's operating system.
And I honestly had no idea there were so many GUI choices available on Linux for MySQL.
Only having experience with MySQL Workbench and phpMyAdmin, it is good to know there are other options available if needed.

Kinsta Launches New Application Hosting and Database Hosting Services
(yahoo.com)
#php #mysql #database
I previously covered the beta launch of Kinsta’s Application and Database Hosting a few weeks back in the OpenLampTech publication.
In the past, Kinsta has mainly been known for and operated in the "managed WordPress hosting space".
Now with application and database hosting offerings, existing and new customers can get an app (or database) up and running on the trusted infrastructure.

New Missing Menu Items Plugin Adds Site Building Links to WordPress Admin
(wptavern.com)
#wordpress
This article discusses a handy plugin that brings a lot of useful links and resources together in the WordPress admin dashboard.
With Full Site Editing (FSE), or whatever it will eventually be called, the navigation around the different elements of block editing still leaves something to be desired.
This plugin closes that gap.

7 WordPress Best Practices For Real Engineers
(Robbie Cahill - dev.to)
#wordpress #php
Plenty of sage advice in this one. Here are my favorite quotes by the author from each section:
Security - "Filter your inputs and escape your output."
Caching, caching, caching - "But if you get even half of the scale of scale of 500 million pageviews per month, you should also do server side caching."
Let WordPress be WordPress - "The idea is you should try to get what you need done while writing the minimal amount of custom code."
Follow modern best practices in your code - "There is nothing preventing you from following best practices like SOLID, YANGI and DRY in your own code."
Don’t reinvent the wheel - "Embrace the open source movement."
Keep it simple - "...if you can get away with just using CSS and no PHP or JavaScript, do this."
What not to use WordPress for - "WordPress is a CMS."
