The OpenLampTech developer newsletter is one year old! I honestly don’t know where the past year went. Obviously, I had my nose buried in some fantastic content since OpenLampTech publishes mostly curated newsletters.

If there is one newsletter I am reading every week, week in and week out, it is Growth Currency. I bet you will too. If you are like me and wish to grow your own newsletter, Growth Currency is your currency.
Due to whatever technical difficulties Substack and I had with last week's newsletter, I seemed to have published an empty post.
Here is the full newsletter for those who missed it.
I am so proud of OpenLampTech's one-year anniversary!
Here is this week’s content.
Laravel Eloquent — 5 Tips & Tricks
(Gael Duval - medium.com)
#php #laravel
My thoughts: Laravel is one of the most powerful - and popular - PHP frameworks in today's web development world. Laravel's Eloquent ORM makes working with the database easier for developers, often abstracting away complicated (or at the very least) redundant SQL code such as CRUD operations.
Eloquent seems to have a method for pretty much any database query you can think of and the author explores 5 favorites in this post with a quick recap of each.

Arrays in PHP: How and Where to Use Them | Code Less with Arrays
(TechBullion)
#php
My thoughts: Where would we be without arrays in PHP? I'm sure you use them (and abuse them) just as much as I do.
You can create an array in PHP with either the array()
function or a set of square brackets []
.
And you can stuff just about anything into a PHP array (for better or worse).
Learn more about the different types of PHP arrays and see examples in this article.

How to quickly recover SQL databases
(mtltimes.ca)
#sql
My thoughts: I heard a saying one time that goes along the lines of, "You're only as good as your best backup."
Speaking of backups, you do have them, right?
And, do they work?
If the backups aren't tested, how can we know they will work?
Having a backup is one thing. But, having a working backup is something else.
Definitely worth thinking about.

The WordPress Hooks Bootcamp: How to Use Actions, Filters, and Custom Hooks
(kinsta.com)
#wordpress
My thoughts: I'm currently trying (and struggling a bit) to get my head around WordPress Hooks. With different functions like add_action()
and do_action()
, learning when and where to use what can be overwhelming.
Fortunately, it looks like I've found the be-all and end-all guide from the good folks at Kinsta.
This is a dense article - which is good as there is a lot to cover - so bookmark it if needed.
I am.

10 more essential MySQL performance tuning tips
(infoworld.com)
#mysql
My thoughts: I'm a firm believer that even the best application code (of which I'm still learning how to write 😆), won't help a non-performant database.
When the database is slow, so is everything else.
Top points that caught my attention:
A good schema design goes a long way
Query reviews - As the application or requirements change, so too might the queries
Take advantage of Common Table Expressions

SQL Transactions and Isolation Levels: The Ultimate Guide
(databasestar.com)
#sql #mysql
My thoughts: Ben Brumm at the Database Star Academy publishes some of the best SQL content on the web and even participated in an interview for the OpenLampTech publication.
If you are working with data and write operations (INSERT
, UPDATE
, or DELETE
), you most likely are (or should be - depending on) working within a TRANSACTION
.
Unsure of what a TRANSACTION
or Isolation Level is?
Here is your guide.

7 Mistakes New Linux Users Make (and How to Avoid Them)
(howtogeek.com)
#linux
My thoughts: Gone are the days when you had to follow the Arch Wiki or focus on a Slackware install from scratch to have a powerful Linux distro. Unless of course, that's what you want to do - then tinker away.
Getting up and going with Linux is far easier nowadays, although you can certainly get analysis paralysis from the sheer number of distribution choices available.
We all make mistakes and you likely will make them in Linux too.
This guide can help you mitigate them and have a more enjoyable Linux experience.
