One of the main things I enjoy as I learn more about WooCommerce is how impactful small PHP snippets can be for a specific requirement. Like always, I’m sharing what I learn as I learn. Let’s change the stock phrasing on the Single Product page…

How MySQL Configuration Impacts the Performance of Web Applications
#mysql #webdevelopment
My thoughts: Web application performance tuning comes down to more than just tight or optimized code. Oftentimes, the database itself can be the bottleneck in poor-performing web applications. Configuration is an art at times. Releem founder Roman Agabekov explores use cases for better MySQL database tuning and performance with Releem.
Security Tip: Leaking Data After Changes
(Laravel Security In Depth)
#php #laravel #webdevelopment
My thoughts: Keeping up with application changes can be difficult. Laravel Security expert
discusses in this piece about best practices in Laravel for leaking data. Laravel has specific methods you can use to make sure your models and/or controllers aren't leaking any data. How to Fix Invalid JSON Error in WordPress
#wordpress #web
My thoughts: If you have been tinkering with WordPress for any amount of time, then you've likely encountered this error. A few ways you can fix this issue as discussed in the article range from checking the permalink structure to regenerating the .htaccess file. Visiting log files can also help access the issues at hand.
Benefits of Using Schema for WordPress
#wordpress
My thoughts: All this time and I've never heard schema used in this context for WordPress. Which isn't surprising at all. Basically, search engines better understand your content and business through schema. Search engines know a web page's type of information using schema.
Substring in MySQL – Syntax and Examples
#sql #mysql #database
My thoughts: MySQL (and SQL in general) string functions are some of my favorites. Manipulating text is powerful. If you need a specific portion of a string, SUBSTRING()
will return it, depending on what position of the string you start from and how much (length-wise) you need back. SUBSTRING_INDEX()
is a similar MySQL string function I've used quite a bit.
Getting Out of PHP Dependency Hell With Composer
#php
My thoughts: Oh boy. Dependencies. Thank goodness for Composer, which is a program that manages dependencies in PHP. Two main benefits of Composer (but not by any means the only ones) are dependency version locking and a built-in autoloader. Some of the modern PHP frameworks utilize Composer in many of their installation tutorials. Composer information can be found at: https://getcomposer.org/
A guide to strings in MySQL
#sql #mysql #database
My thoughts: MySQL string and text data may be the most used and least thought out of all the data types. Of course, I have no data to back that claim. It's just a hunch. MySQL provides 3 data types to store strings: CHAR
, TEXT
, and VARCHAR
. Then there is the case of binary and nonbinary strings along with character sets and collation. There is a lot to know and learn about MySQL strings.

11 Horrible Mistakes You’re Making With PHP Website Development
#php #webdevelopment
My thoughts: One of the most challenging things about the self-taught developer route is it seems way easier to get something wrong than it does right. This opinionated piece does have a lot of valid points. One that I hope no one is still using is the old - deprecated - MySQL extension for PHP. Please don't use that one.
WordPress Contributors Work Towards Removing Site Editor Beta Label for 6.2 Release
#wordpress #cms
My thoughts: Full Site Editing (FSE) is coming like a freight train and I wonder just how defined the lines will become as time goes on. I've only used page builders to build out sites in WordPress but I know I should learn FSE at some point (and do plan to). More (great looking) block themes are added all the time and continue to improve the experience (so I hear).
A Look Under the Hood at Engine Awesome, a Laravel-based SaaS App Using Gutenberg
#php #laravel #wordpress
My thoughts: Gutenberg is making its way into other application structures. Not only is Gutenberg (The Block Editor) integral in WordPress, but also, we now see a Laravel application using Gutenberg for its User Interface (UI). As Gutenberg continues to develop, I think it is safe to say we will see more software(s) utilize its libraries.
