More small and impactful customizations in WooCommerce. In this article, I am using PHP code snippets to (temporarily) remove the product short description from displaying on the single product page. Firstly, for all products. Then we will filter for a specific product only, which may simulate a more real-world use case.

I’ve published another fantastic developer interview this week in the OpenLampTech publication. You do not want to miss this one. Enjoy!
Below is the content I am sharing I enjoyed this week:
JSON columns
#sql #mysql #database
My thoughts; Although I've not technically used JSON columns, I am aware of them and do realize their potential. With JSON columns, you can have the best of both worlds; schema and schema-less design all wrapped in one. MySQL v8 shipped with loads of JSON features, making it possible for more powerful JSON operations. In my opinion, if you use JSON columns for specific datasets and regular built-in 'standard' data types for other column data points, you can essentially contain all the data in one table. Something I'm interested in trying on one of my side projects.
How To Use Mod_Rewrite To Remove Your (.PHP) Extension From Your Work
#php #apache
My thoughts: The .htaccess
file, which defines and controls the behavior of a website using the apache web server, is one powerful file. As they say, "With power comes great responsibility". The .htaccess
file, utilizing the mod_rewrite
directive can remove the .php extension from a file along with many other options. There is a nice dive here on the .htaccess
file and some of the things you can use to direct the apache web server. Definitely unfamiliar territory for me.
WooCommerce: Bulk Search & Replace SKUs
#wordpress #woocommerce #php
My thoughts: I'm spending all the time I can on the Business Bloomer website as I want to learn more about programming in WooCommerce. You could use search and replace functionality in the WordPress MySQL or MariaDB databases if you know or are comfortable with SQL. However, you can also use the PHP str_replace()
function and WordPress action hooks for your WooCommerce product SKUs, replacing text portions as needed/desired. Learn how in this article.
MySQL Document Store - Peeking Under the Covers
#mysql #sql #database
My thoughts: MySQL v8 was a game-changer of a release. With the Document Store, you can have NoSQL storage but still, harness the power of SQL for the data (if you want). CRUD operations can be programmed in SQL, JavaScript, or Python in the MySQL Shell. The Document Store is a powerful alternative means to work with data in MySQL. This article covers some of the queries that are executed behind the scenes in the Document Store.
PHP report: Majority of deployments use versions that are out of support
#php
My thoughts: Sadly, I'm raising my hand in admission on this one with one of the internal intranet-type of sites I've built for some custom tooling and workflows. I am planning a PHP version upgrade soon. But, I haven't gotten it completed yet. Apparently, I'm not alone here either. Many other applications, sites, and services are using outdated versions of PHP. If you're in the same camp as me, we should upgrade soon.

Difference Between WHERE and HAVING Clause
#sql #database
My thoughts: Whether the ORM you're using happens to provide both WHERE
and HAVING
clause functionality or not, it is critical to know the differences between these 2 clauses. We are typically always filtering the SQL data queries in the applications and both of these clauses are used but for different types of filtering. Learn more from one of the knowledgeable SQL developers in this detailed article. Read Ben Brumm's OpenLampTech developer interview for more information about the author.
The Ultimate WordPress Local Development Cheatsheet
#wordpress #cms
My thoughts: Local WordPress development is the way to go for me as I'm learning more and more WordPress. I've tried and used DevKinsta in the past, and do like it. However, I've been using and really enjoying Local. Local is super easy to install and use. Spinning up a local WordPress site is a breeze. Yet, other options are XAMPP, MAMP, or WAMP which offer more control and configuration as opposed to those previously-listed WordPress-specific solutions. Here is your cheat sheet for this type of local WordPress development.
