On the WooCommerce Single Product page, there is some ‘real estate’ you could potentially use to display other information about the product, banner, sale, etc. In this article, I am sharing what I learned about customizing this area. Read on to learn more…
Below is the content I am sharing I enjoyed this week:
Does Drupal Have a Path to Growth?
#php #drupal
My thoughts: On my best day of trying, my summary here couldn’t do this masterpiece of an article any justice. So I am saying now; read this one if you don’t read any others in this week’s OpenLampTech newsletter. I won’t butcher it with my commentary but I do hope any of the ‘governing bodies’ in Drupal read this and consider taking action on many of the points provided in this opinion piece by Reuben Walker of Symfony Station. I am not a Drupal developer myself and am nowhere near embedded in its community but the context here makes sense. Learn more about Reuben in this OpenLampTech developer interview.
Function Differences Between MariaDB 10.6 and MySQL 8.0
#sql #mysql #mariadb #database
My thoughts: You'll find both of these SQL implementations across many applications and LAMP stack projects. Admittedly, it is easy to confuse MySQL and MariaDB because, at one time, they were essentially drop-in replacements for one another. Not anymore. Each offers vastly different features while still remaining an RDBMS at the core. Learn about functions and types and their differences for both MySQL and MariaDB in this article from the MariaDB knowledge base.
6 Major PHP Security Vulnerabilities And How To Fix Them
#php
My thoughts: Anytime I can learn something about security, I'm all in. Especially when it comes to PHP and being a self-taught developer. I absolutely want to make sure I'm writing the most secure code I can according to my (current) knowledge and understanding. We should all pin this article above our desks and practice what is within. It is one fantastic piece covering 6 security vulnerabilities, each with examples and best practices to mitigate the risk(s).
PHP Themes Aren’t Dead
(roots.io)
#php #wordpress
My thoughts: I've eventually got to adopt a mindset shift to blocks and the site editor in WordPress. I hate to take the risk that all my PHP knowledge is for naught (is that even accurate?). But, there is such a split between the site editor and page builders that I often don't know which way to go. I think both 'schools' involve some learning and commitment. This article gives me hope that both worlds can co-exist with hybrid themes. Furthermore, PHP knowledge is still valuable in a WordPress context.
Betrayed by WordPress
#wordpress #cms
My thoughts: These personalized accounts of frustrations (that's probably the wrong word choice - but bear with me) in WordPress development are definitely echoing (see what I did there 😀) loud and clear. I'm nowhere near competent enough with WordPress PHP. Moreover, just thinking about trying my hand at JavaScript (I'm not talking about jQuery either) gives me a headache. Nowadays, you need to at least be familiar with JavaScript if you're developing blocks or something for Site Editing In WordPress. It (WordPress) is definitely heading that way with no signs of changing either.
Working with SQL AND, OR, and NOT Operators
#sql #database
My thoughts: Oftentimes, you need additional filters to further constrain SQL query results. In the WHERE
clause, you can use both the AND
and OR
operators and place multiple filter requirements on the data. Using the NOT
operator negates a specific conditional. Learn more about these important SQL concepts in this article. Find MySQL-specific information here: Multiple WHERE Clause Conditionals Using the MySQL AND Logical Operator.

WooCommerce: Show Related Products In a Blog Post!
#wordpress #woocommerce #php
My thoughts: More brilliance from the Business Bloomer site. I'm going to start my own WooCommerce online e-Commerce shop at some point in the (near) future and will definitely put this tactic to use. I just don't see a lot of online stores blogging that much in the bass fishing-related industry. Perhaps that is a target market for some form of service, no? Anyway, this post demonstrates how you can show related products in other places in your shop besides the Single Product page. Good stuff.
WordPress helps me unwind – story of a part-time developer
#wordpress #cms
My thoughts: This is a very interesting story that resonates deeply with me personally. While I don't quite have the longevity or credentials (nowhere near it actually) as the author, I've always kept something WordPress-related on my plate. Be it blogging on the platform, customizing WooCommerce through research and learning, or getting my head around plugin Development, WordPress is always right there. This story covers 1 view of part-time WordPress development.
High Performance Order Storage is (soon to be) the New Normal
#wordpress #woocommerce
My thoughts: WooCommerce is making strides in optimizing the checkout process by improving order creation. With dedicated tables now, specifically for order data, the posts, and postmeta tables benefit from a performance gain as well. Backups, order metadata queries for reporting, and maintaining order data will be vastly improved with the new data store (in the database) options.
