I really enjoy sharing the developer interviews in OpenLampTech. This week's is another great read and story you don't want to miss. Check it out here in case you missed it:
All commentary is by me unless otherwise quoted.
I'm going to publish my own similar '2 cents' on this topic someday in OpenLampTech. When you encounter those PHP haters, here are your facts, figures, and armament. PHP-based sites and applications make up for a massive percentage of the internet. And for good reason. The stats don't lie. Read 'em and weep. [timotijhof.net]
How to Connect MS Access to MySQL via ODBC Driver
Believe it or not, but there are still programs and applications that use MS Access. I wouldn't believe it either but I work with a couple of applications in my day job pretty regularly that use MS Access as the database. It's a nice workaround to connect to MySQL and (somewhat) work with it through MS Access. As we know, MS Access is very limiting and often difficult to work with. [Techiexpert]
Why does a backslash prefix improve PHP function call performance
If you think you know everything (or even a lot) about something, start curating content for a newsletter and I guarantee you'll (happily) find out you don't. Or that's my story with OpenLampTech. Here is another such lesson that I only learned because I'm constantly searching for and reading content to share in OpenLampTech. I never knew you could prefix a PHP function with a backslash (\) as a micro-optimization. [deviaene.eu]
PHP isn’t that bad, so why the hate?
Awe yea. The haters are going to hate, which I don't get at all (kind of kindergarten-ish if you ask me). I support all programming languages because each of them has its place and does its specific tasks well. I'm sure at some point PHP was awful (long before I ever even knew what it was) and probably deserved some flak. But, those dogs don't hunt anymore. PHP improves with every release. Not to mention some 70% plus of websites whose server-side language is known, runs on PHP. Must not be too bad, right? [Medium]
Export MySQL to Excel with PHP and PhpSpreadsheet
Spreadsheets are everywhere in every business. Using them is pretty much a necessity in this day in age. We know PHP and MySQL are like peas and carrots, working/melding extremely well with each other. What if you need to write and save MySQL query results to an Excel file using PHP? Use PhpSpreadsheet. I've used this library myself a good bit and it works very well. [phpflow.com]
