I think at one time, MariaDB did (or I thought it did) depend on MySQL. However, according to some of this article’s content, MariaDB does not depend on MySQL. At least not anymore, as these 2 databases have completely diverged into their own separate paths.
This quote from the source article sums it up nicely:
“But the reality is that the development of MariaDB has been independent for many years already. MariaDB developers don’t wait for MySQL to implement features, test cases, fix bugs, or innovate. They write their own tests, create their own features, and solve problems in their own way.”

As Oracle loses interest in MySQL, devs mull future options
Here, as of late, it seems some content I have been seeing leans towards this opinion about Oracle and MySQL, while others say Oracle’s stewardship is not questionable.
There are other open-source (and proprietary) SQL options available, although a complete swap over to another RDBMS poses challenges in and of itself.
My Chrome Tabs Tell a Story We Haven’t Processed Yet
This is 100% spot on for me, personally. I was recently discussing with a (non-developer) coworker the other day how my development workflow has drastically changed in the age of AI.
Although I’ll admit, for the longest time, I was not on board with it (AI). But once I found uses for it, I started leveraging it to my advantage.
I still try to keep some of those search skills sharp and at the ready.

Expired Oracle Patent Clears Path For Faster Sorting In MySQL And PostgreSQL
This is quite interesting.
The curious bug in me wonders why Oracle would let this patent expire (if that is how patents work).
Then, which open-source database(s), if any, will implement it into their sorting algorithms?
